About this deal

If you’re looking for a lens to shoot the stars with your Sony, I’d suggest a wide angle prime with an aperture more in the f/2 range, such as the excellent and affordable manual focus Rokinon 12mm f/2, reviewed here.

You can pay more for the A6500, but the only thing the A6500 does that the A6400 can't is in-body sensor-shift stabilization. Otherwise this A6400 is newer and has more features than the more expensive but older A6500.

The A6XXX cameras are hard to distinguish – but is the popular Sony A6400 still a good buy?

Compact (E-mount APS-C format) and lightweight (325 grams (11.5 oz.)), this lens features an optical design optimized for short flange focal distances that makes it small and manageable on its own while also contributing to notable reductions in overall system size, weight, and portability. As usual, we found the Micro Four Thirds Live MOS sensor in the Olympus E-PL9 offered unusually good dynamic range across the ISO range. The CMOS sensor (not an X-Trans type) in the X-T100 came second and the A6400 and EOS M50 were pretty much level in third place. Sony A6400 review: Verdict

In daylight landscapes, the Sony A6400 captured very good detail. Dynamic range was once again impressive, and even distant objects had good sharpness and definition around the edges. We didn't notice any chromatic aberrations, although this lens did add very slight vignetting at the corners of some of the samples we took. Macros were equally detailed, with good edge sharpness and colours. Despite having a narrow aperture, the 18-135mm lens can produce pleasant bokeh when shooting portraits. The ‘E-mount’ refers to the Sony mirrorless mount itself, which is rather confusing, since E lenses and FE lenses are different. A high zoom ratio provides a versatile 27mm to 202.5mm range (35mm format equivalent, 7.5x optical zoom) that covers a broad spectrum of subjects and situations: scenery, nature, portraits, and general day-to-day photography. The auto focus is fast and effective and with such a wide focal length, I almost never had issues with getting accurate focus. The A6400 has superb high ISO performance. For all normal uses at reasonable sizes as you can see below, the A6400 gives perfectly wonderful images at up to ISO32,000, with just a little bit of color mottling at ISO32,000. It's perfectly usable at ISO51,200, and even at ISO102,400 the images are fine if you don't mind slightly less saturated colors.Sony's a6400 is equipped with a 24.2MP APS-C image sensor that is paired with an upgraded BIONZ X processor to deliver improved image quality and color reproduction in all types of shooting conditions. Standard ISO ranges up to ISO 32,000 for both stills and movies and is expandable up to ISO 102,400 for still images, with good noise reduction at medium and high sensitivities.

Then there's the Canon EOS RP, which is a full-frame camera with a flip-out screen and a relatively small, light body at roughly the same price as our A6400 kit. While we haven't tested the EOS RP yet, you couldexpect good image quality thanks to its large sensor. It offers quality similar to that of other high-end full-frame lenses in an APS-C design. I was also impressed that despite being so sturdy feeling, it is surprisingly lightweight. In addition to 3:2 and 16:9 aspect (width-to-height) ratios, the 1:1 aspect ratio used by social media platforms is now offered as an option. This eliminates the need for cumbersome hand-trimming of images after shooting in preparation for posting on social media.

Mounted on the a6400, the Sony E 24mm f/1.8 has a nice balance. It is larger than some of the compact lens offerings for the a6400, but the benefit is the fast aperture! This lens unexpectedly caught my attention. I wasn’t sure I would like it but I find myself using it more than I expected. Off, On, Automatic, Fill-in, Slow Sync, Rear Curtain Sync, Red Eye Reduction, High Speed Sync (HSS) The new 26-megapixel sensor on the A6700 marks a decent upgrade over the A6400’s 24.2 MP sensor, offering about 7% more pixels. This higher-resolution sensor will provide you with more flexibility for cropping your photos and should offer a slightly better dynamic range. What would you choose for image processing: I set M2 for photos of people: moderate resolution and saturation, and set Auto ISO to a slowest speed of 1/125 to stop motion. The Sony A6700 and the A6400 are both excellent cameras offering a broad spectrum of features and capabilities for photographers and videographers of all skill levels. While you can use the touch screen to select AF areas, paradoxically the touch screen doesn't work for setting menus, text entries or much else. Weird.
